The Best Time to Visit Hanoi, Season by Season
When to visit Hanoi: golden autumns and milk flowers, cold dry winters, drizzly springs with lilies, hot summers with lotus on West Lake. Weather by season.

Hanoi has four real seasons, and each has its admirers. Ask a Hanoian to choose just one, though, and most will say autumn.
Autumn (September to November): the best season
Honey-coloured sunshine and a dry, cool breeze. In October the milk-flower trees bloom along many streets, a scent people either love or can't stand. Vendors carry green rice flakes and persimmons, and late in the season bicycles go by loaded with white daisies. It is also the busiest time, so book early, especially around National Day on 2 September.
Winter (December to February): cold and dry
Some days fall below 10°C under grey skies, with a north wind through bare branches. In return: steaming phở, corn roasting on street corners and the bustle before Tet. Bring a warm coat, a scarf and lip balm.
Spring (February to April): drizzle and blossom
Fine drizzle like mist, and humid days when floors and walls bead with moisture. But in late March white sưa blossom covers a few corners of the city, and early April brings Easter lilies sold from bicycles. Lunar New Year usually falls in late January or February, when the city empties and many places close for a few days.
Summer (May to August): heat and showers
Hot, sometimes above 35°C, with sudden evening downpours. The reward: red flame trees, purple crape myrtle and lotus on West Lake in June. Go out early and late, and rest indoors at midday.
So when should you come?
- For the most pleasant weather: October and November.
- To see Tet preparations: the few weeks before Lunar New Year.
- For quieter streets, if you can handle the heat: June to August.
